NOAA weather satellite images

To those of you who are hearing this term for the first time, NOAA stands for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They have put up few satellites orbiting around the earth which sends out weather images. As of now there are 3 full time active satellites NOAA-15, 18 and 19.

The signals from these satellites can be received using a cheap RTLSDR and can be decoded using a software(WXtoImg).

You can see few images captured with my setup.
All these images were received live from the satellite during the Chennai floods due to the torrential rains.

How to receive NOAA weather satellite images:

1. Buy an RTLSDR from ebay or Aliexpress.com.

2. Install SDR# following this:

3. Install WXtoImg from here:
         http://www.wxtoimg.com/
4. Install a virtual cable

5. Build a QFH antenna or 137 MHz referring the below:
         https://www.jcoppfens.com/ant/qfh/calc.en.php
6. Connect the antenna to RTLSDR by using any adatpers like MCX to BNC adatper. Receive the signal using SDR# and route it to WXtoImg using Virtual cable. WXtoImg will start painting the satellite image on your screen realtime.
